Mount Herman Cleanup

PREREGISTRATION IS CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE. Please email us to let us know if you are coming and additional information with directions and meeting time & locations will be included in the confirmation email.

Join us for the cleanup of MULTIPLE on Mt Herman Rd that need our attention before weather prevents it. We will be focusing on the various off shoots up at the top of the road. The road does NOT require 4WD, but is dirt so a higher clearance front wheel drive vehicle is prefered. More information below.

CARAVAN MEETING TIME & LOCATIONS:

8:30am - Departs from the following locations:

Monument: Dirty Woman Park (17575 Mitchell Ave) in the main parking lot by the playing field.

Woodland Park: Woodland Park Middle School (600 E Kelley’s Rd) in the dirt parking lot PAST the bus loop on the east side of the school on Rampart Range Rd above the baseball field.

BASE CAMP – near Mile Marker 3 on CR 320 (Mt Herman Rd).  The roads do NOT require 4WD, but are dirt and can be washboardy, so give yourself plenty of time to go an appropriate speed. We suggest caravaning (meeting locations listed above) and following others up that are familiar with the area.

FROM WOODLAND PARK:  CR 320 (Mt Herman Rd) takes off from CR 300 (Rampart Range Rd) between MM 25 & MM 26.

FROM MONUMENT:  Take Mt Herman Rd to the top.  If you reach the stop sign at CR 300 (Rampart Range Rd) you have gone too far.  A higher clearance vehicle is suggested for this part of the road.  It has a couple of large ruts, but you can go off to the side and pass around them.  It was done in a Toyota Hylander and Subaru with no problem, but a Prius may have difficulty.

SIGN IN & SAFETY BRIEFING: Begins at 9:30am at Base Camp

LUNCH:   PROVIDED, after the cleanup at about noon

BRING:  Refillable water bottle, gloves, wear sunscreen, a coat, long pants & STURDY shoes/boots

PROVIDED:  water, gloves (if needed), grabbers, trash bags

Public Lands Youth Day Cleanup

PREREGISTRATION IS CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE. Please email us to let us know if you are coming and additional information with directions and meeting time & locations will be included in the confirmation email.

SPONSORED by PIKE’S PEAK POLARIS in Woodland Park

We will be celebrating Public Lands Day at Rainbow Falls Riding Area with local youth groups. We encourage families, youth groups, etc. to come camp in the free, dispersed camping spots in the area for the weekend, and then join the cleanup on Saturday. Sites are not reserved, so please arrive early (Friday is best) to find a site that will suit your needs.

The area has both easily accessible sites along the side road, and other sites further into the riding area. The more dedicated FoF volunteers will display their banner/flag/logo so that when you pass by you can choose to stop in to get acquainted or information. Fishing and non-motorized boating is available nearby at Manitou Lake. If you have an OHV please bring it as there are many areas that we would like to get to that are inaccessible to regular vehicles.

9:00am - Safety Briefing and break into cleanup groups

LUNCH:  will be provided.

BRING:  Refillable water bottle, gloves, wear sunscreen, a coat, long pants & STURDY shoes/boots

PROVIDED:  water, gloves (if needed), grabbers, trash bag

Old Stage Rd Cleanup

PreRegistration is currently unavailable

Please email us at contactus@focusontheforest.org with your name & tshirt size and you will be preregistered. An email wiith be sent with detailed instructions and additional information. We also ask that you review the release on this website prior to coming and a signature can be included on the signin form when you arrive.

We will be working on Old Stage Rd/Upper Gold Camp Rd that goes from Colorado Springs to Cripple Creek. Its a beautiful area, but over time it has become a problem area.. Our Graffiti Team will also be focusing on the rocks in the area to clean them up as well.

If you have an off road vehicle we could sure use help with some of the more remote trails in the area so please let us know in the notes when pre-registering.

We welcome and need additional volunteers, but ask that if anyone is joining you to have them shoot us an email so that we can make sure to have enough supplies, food and t-shirts for everyone.  If they decide to come last minute that is ok as well as we do plan for a few extras.  Saturday looks to be a lovely day, but we suggest that you dress in layers as weather is ever changing up on the mountain.

Due to the Pre-Registration on the website being inoperable, we will be able to register everyone on site in the morning, but request that you let us know you are coming and your tshirt size..  To save time in the morning, we request that you review the waiver form on our website in advance, but we will have copies at sign in as well.

SIGN-IN & SAFETY BRIEFING:  9:00am at Base Camp

BASE CAMP – Directions from both Woodland Park and Colorado Springs are given below.  Please read over both and decide which is the best for you.  They are both a beautiful drive.  Coming from Woodland Park you avoid the hill going up the mountain out of Colorado Springs.  Some people decide to come up from the Springs and then go out the top.  An added bonus right now is the Rita creation near Victor that people have been going to see.  You decide what is best for you.  High clearance/4WD vehicles would be helpful for some of the side roads we will work on, but if not, regular vehicles are fine.  Extremely low clearance vehicles are not recommended at all.

LUNCH:  PROVIDED @ noon

BRING:  Refillable water bottle, gloves, wear sunscreen, a coat, long pants & STURDY shoes/boots

PROVIDED:  FoF Tshirt, water, gloves (if needed), grabbers, buckets, trash bags, and tools.

Reception is limited in the area, so please text if possible.  If you are unable to make it I ask that you please let us know so that you can be removed from the list, otherwise, we will plan to see you there.  Please let me know if you have any additional questions.

Thanks, Eve

DIRECTIONS to Base Camp from Colorado Springs

It is about 15 miles and takes about 50 minutes, but the road is gorgeous.  There will be a steep hill coming from the Colorado Springs side for the first few miles.  The dirt road has been graded recently and is not rutted/washed out.  It can be a bit washboardy, but is not bad.  The last 2.2 miles the road can have some potholes & bumps, but not much more than our local roads.  High clearance/4WD vehicles are not required, but extremely low clearance vehicles are not recommended

USING GPS Maps app:

Enter:  Penrose-Rosemont Reservoir

Continue 1.3 miles and Base Camp is a LARGE turnout/parking area on your left.

SIMPLIFIED DIRECTIONS

From 21st Street/Cresta Rd

RIGHT on Mesa

RIGHT at the roundabout and take your 1st exit to stay on Mesa

Mesa then takes off to the right, but you need to stay on the main road, which is now Park

LEFT on Penrose

RIGHT at Cheyenne Mountain Blvd (goes to left)/Old Stage Rd, FS 368 (goes to right)

Continue up through the Broadmoor area to the sharp, hairpin turn as it turns to dirt. Large sign says "Bear Trap Ranch 7 miles

Stay on main road for 13.6 miles. Base Camp is a LARGE turnout/parking area on your left

SIMPLIFIED DIRECTIONS with mileages & landmarks from where road turns to dirt (see above)

0.0          Sharp, hairpin turn where road turns to dirt - road was graded 2 weeks ago, is washboardy, but not a lot of bumps or ruts

DIRECTIONS to Base Camp from Woodland Park

It is 37 miles and takes about 1 hour, but the road is gorgeous, and you avoid the steep hill coming from the Colorado Springs side.  It can be a bit bumpy, but is not bad.  4WD & high clearance vehicles are not required, but extremely low clearance vehicles are not recommended

USING GPS Maps app:

Enter:  Penrose-Rosemont Reservoir

Unfortunately, it is not all together accurate and may take you on some side roads that use to be shorter, but are now actually closed/dead end.  Basically, once you hit the dirt, stay on the main, heavily traveled road and Base Camp will be on your right.  There will also be signs along the way confirming that you are going in the correct direction and at intersections that you may question.

CSC4W Cleanup (Copy)

This cleanup is put together by the Colorado Springs Christian 4 Wheelers. The cleanup will be on Old Stage Road and the trails that take off from it. Although FoF isn’t coordinating this cleanup, we invite all our volunteers to join the efforts and make a huge difference.

CSC4W is an offroad group that works on trails in more remote areas. They are a great group of people that FoF has partnered with a number of times to make a difference.

CONTACT: Kirk Bode at kebode@gmail.com and 719-650-6689. with questions.

MEETING LOCATION: St. Paul's Catholic Church parking lot (right behind the Broadmoor) at 7:45 a.m. June 11th. There we'll get direction from the USFS on what they want us to do and where they want us.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Old Stage Rd/North Gold Camp is a small dirt road that winds around and up from Colorado Springs all the way toward Cripple Creek. The road can have ruts and be a washboard in areas. Higher clearance vehicles are recommended, and 4 wheel drive would be great. Travel to and from the actual work sites can take a little while, hence the early start time and later ending time.

BRING:  Water bottle, work gloves, wear sunscreen, a coat, long pants & STURDY shoes/boots,

LUNCH:  Is NOT provided. Please bring a lunch and snacks.

FoF & Youth Day Cleanup

Join us for a cleanup of the Rainbow Falls Riding Area, just north of Woodland Park. This cleanup is sponsored by COLDWELL BANKER and is perfect for all ages. We encourage Youth groups and families to come out for the weekend as there are many dispersed camping spots in the area, as well as some wonderful OHV trails. Fishing and non-motorized boating is available nearby at Manitou Lake. If you have an OHV please bring it as there are a number of areas that we would like to get to that are inaccessible to regular vehicles.

PLEASE PRE-REGISTER BELOW (if you have pre-registered for an event this year a simple email will be sufficient letting us know you are coming and who might be joining you.)

DIRECTIONS TO RAINBOW FALLS RIDING AREA

Take Hwy 67 NORTH from Woodland Park towards Deckers 11 miles. Turn RIGHT on Rainbow Falls Rd. The main parking area with vault toilets will be toward the right. The road continues around the parking area and up to many camping sites, but can require higher clearance vehicles depending on the weather and use of the road this season. The road that viers to the left is suitable for all vehicle types and will have camping sites along it.

Join us for a morning in the northern part of Rampart Range Rd (CR 300). We will be working in the area of Balanced Rock Rd (CR 322). For those of you familiar with the area, it takes off to the right from Rampart Range Rd (CR 300) just north of Mile Marker 26 and 1 mile north of Mt Herman Rd.

A number of us will be camping in the area Friday - Sunday and plan to go down to the Upper Reservoir at the end of Balanced Rock Rd to explore the area we haven’t been to before. Please feel free to join us.

Mt Herman Cleanup

We are excited to get back up to Mt Herman Road (CR 320) and dress it up. We try to hit the area at least once a year just to get the miscellaneous stuff that accumulates. At this time there are no major messes (that we know of), so it should be a nice leisurely day on the mountain.

MEETING LOCATIONS:  Carpool/Caravan to cleanup site, ARRIVE EARLY

8:30am - Departs from the following locations:

Monument: Dirty Woman Park (17575 Mitchell Ave) in the main parking lot by the playing field.

Woodland Park: Woodland Park Middle School (600 E Kelley’s Rd) in the bus loop on the east side of the school on Rampart Range Rd.

STAGING & CLEANUP AREA – CR 320 (Mt Herman Rd), which takes off from CR 300 (Rampart Range Rd).  We will caravan to 320B to break into groups and work our way along CR 320 in both directions.  We will then meet back again at 320B for lunch

The road does NOT require 4WD, but is dirt and can be washboardy, so give yourself plenty of time to go an appropriate speed. We suggest caravaning and following others up that are familiar with the area.

Registration/SignIn & Safety Briefing:       9:00am

Lunch:  PROVIDED, after the cleanup at about 11:30

CSC4W Cleanup
